Animal welfare
Animalia has developed a series of methods in order to assess and enhance animal welfare. The methods comprise most of the value chain, and begin with how to handle the animals at the farm and in the transport collection process.

Animalia is in several ways involved in the work for improving and maintaining good animal welfare. |
Furthermore we supervise what happens to the animals in the transport vehicles and in the lairage, and how the animals are driven, stunned and killed. The consequences of the domestic ban on castration of pigs from 2009 have initiated considerable research efforts and needs for new, multidisciplinary solutions. Animalia is heavily involved in the selection of an appropriate strategy, and has initiated several research projects regarding this challenge.
Animal Welfare Course in abattoirs
This course addresses conditions and factors that are vital to ensure animal welfare at the slaughterhouses, and includes lectures in understanding animal senses, instincts and behaviour. The course also focuses on proper handling and driving of animals, optimal lairage, stunning and killing. An important part of the course is the inspection of the lairage including video recording and group discussions with the staff. It is important to make the staff understand their own influence on animal welfare. This course is arranged on request.
Ethical Audit at the slaughter-house
An Ethical Audit is a thorough evaluation of all factors that may influence animal welfare at the abattoir. The audit is based on a 3–5 day observation. The Ethical Audit is an assessment of vital factors influencing animal welfare. The Ethical Audit helps the slaughterhouse management and staff to address the appropriate resources and efforts in order to maximise animal welfare.
Animal Transport Driver’s Course
The course for drivers of animal transport vehicles is a joint effort between Animalia, the Norwegian Truck Drivers’ Association and the Norwegian Animal Health authority. This is a two-day course that meets the official requirements of compulsory theoretical education.
